I live in Alabama. at the grocery stores, they sell a small basket of green tomatoes for frying. Amazingly yummy BTW. I put the green tomatoes in a basket with fake & real fruit (fake fruit keeps the air circulating around the real, so that they don’t rot as quickly) These tomatoes will ripen in the bowl & taste like you just picked them off the plant. No lie, you can have yummy tomatoes in winter instead of the red, squishy, water filled excuse for a tomato in winter…Whole foods also sells them green. If your store doesn’t’ have green, buy the lightest red to ripen at home. the tomatoes ripen at different times during the week, so you’ll have a perfect one almost everyday.
One thing about living in North Cyprus – fruit and veg are pretty much direct from producer to outlet. They taste quite different. And it’s interesting getting used to seasonal produce again – a glut of strawberries to apricots then on to the next, new harvest.
local fruit & veggies are amazing. I tried farmer’s markets for a while. Then I decided to grow my own stuff. What a difference! Its hard to go to the grocery store in the off season & eat yuck. Which is why i buy green tomatoes! ~amy
