This blossom is as big as a dinner plate. I have lived in Birmingham, Alabama for 20 years, this year. This is the very first time I’ve seen a blossom this close. Usually they are thirty feet in the air. A blossom lasts a few days & then turn the color of dirty gym socks. Which wouldn’t be so bad if all the leaves weren’t dying at the same time & littering the new spring grass. To people in the North, the Magnolia tree is synonymous with the romantic South. My mom said that when she was in the process of moving here, the first thing she was going to do was buy one. She says now, she is glad she didn’t. However, this is one unbelievably beautiful flower & I understand why it is famous.
I took this photograph last week, which means it now probably looks like a boy’s baseball sock after one tough game.
