dear tomato lovers…

I can grow my own tomatoes & NOTHING can beat the flavor of homegrown tomatoes.  I live in Alabama. Anyone remember the movie, ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’? Our Publix sells green tomatoes to fry for those who choose to do so & YUM.

However, I buy the green tomatoes & put them in a bowl on my kitchen table. The tomatoes will ripen on their own within a few days. They taste EXACTLY the same way as fresh garden picked tomatoes. When I buy them, I choose some that have a wee bit of red starting to show & plain green ones. This way, they ripen at different times throughout the week.  I’ll bet if your grocery store doesn’t sell green tomatoes, if you asked, they would order some.  ~a huge tomato fan.

  1. The only tomatoes I’ll eat are the homegrown ones! I love fried green tomatoes, movie and the real thing!! There’s a restaurant in Nashville that serves them with a spicy dipping sauce that’s wonderful! I’ll have to try buying the green ones to ripen at home. Great suggestion, thanks!!

Oh, you will love how close to garden fresh the green grocery store tomatoes taste if you ripen them at home. They taste like sunlight. I do it all winter, buying different shades of green & one that has started to turn…it seems the green ones follow the lead of the one with red. It is wonderful to eat good tomatoes in winter, instead of those gross watery ones. I’d love to know what they put in the dipping sauce!! ~amy

I think they ripen better inside, most of the time, if i leave them on the vine, they begin to rot just before perfection. I have a bowl of fake fruit that I put my tomatoes on top of, so that the air can reach the whole tomato. Good luck! ~amy

  3. Me too. I eat tomatoes every day. My Mom used to pickle green tomatoes, they are absolutely delicious! Green or red or any color the tomato is a hero!

  5. We live in a cold spot, so we have to wait until June to put tomatoes outside to avoid late killing frosts. While the tomato plants grow and put on lots of tomatoes, our night-time temperatures often fall below 50º F throughout the summer, therefore, our tomatoes often do not ripen before we start getting hard frosts again as early as the 3rd week in September. Then we have to pick all the green and partially ripened tomatoes and bring them inside to ripen. Across the river, in town people start getting ripe tomatoes in June.

You do have a short growing season. i’m sorry! At least you can bring them inside to ripen. Nothing quite like a garden tomato. ~amy

I’ve never had fried green tomatoes, but I love using fresh ones from the garden for BLT’s in the summer.

I agree; the best tomatoes are homegrown. It’s really the only way to know what kind of chemicals -or lack of- were used to grow them. I am going to have too many tomatoes to eat this year so I’ll probably pick some green ones and can some.
