the husky with too much blush

Nala loves going to Saab Lake. On our first walk, she found…God only knows what, to rub her face into. Huskies really don’t like water much, usually. Nala LOVES it. She went swimming & fishing. She caught a stick that she thought was a fish. DSC_0042

Beautiful Nala – and it’s not all together unusual for them to enjoy water – but they really do prefer the snow. Although my Shepherd/Husky mix (more Husky than Shepherd) Niekah loves to swim too. She’s always gung ho right in! Curious this.

Hi Patricia, I had another Husky who would be willing to get only his toes wet. Like a little old lady. Nala acts like a little old lady until we get her near water, then she acts like a puppy. I love it. Although, driving home from the lake requires windows open because she smells pretty bad. She lets me give her a bath when we get home with the garden hose. I washed her in the tub once. I was surprised the cops didn’t show up with her screaming & howling like i was cutting off a limb…I love my dog. ~amy

I’m laughing as I read your reply Amy. In a good way. I too had a Shep./Husky – 1st one – who hated to get his toes wet – he’d do anything to avoid puddles! It was, as you’ve said – little old lady thing 😉

Ah wet dog smell – nothing quite like it – bleh! At least she lets you wash her off with the hose. My Niekah doesn’t even like that. She’ll bark at the hose, try to eat it -chase the water stream, get wet by the spray a bit – but try and wash her – no doing. Drag me to the lake (it’s within walking distance) no problem – cope with a bath -nope! As you’ve said – the howling barking crazy crap and yeah, it’s a miracle we haven’t been locked up! Lol – ah the joys of dog ownership – wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🙂

The dogs do have a flare for drama. Shampoo must smell as bad to them, as wet dog does to us! I was shocked to see how docile Nala was when I came at her with shampoo & a hose. I KNOW how lucky I am that I’ve found a way she will tolerate. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d give her the chance to swim, that would have been sad. I can hear in my head, Niekah howling & barking during her bath. 🙂 Maybe you could become a youtube sensation if you video the bathing experience for us all to laugh at (her) but sympathize with you. As you said, I wouldn’t trade the downside of dog ownership for anything either. I think i’d go mad without having a furry beast to love on. 🙂 ~amy

Well Amy, truth be told, the “Niekah washing chronicles” would indeed be quite the howl – pun intended – but I have decided that unless it’s absolutely 300% necessary – then no trying to bathe her – because it’s impossible and the ist time was more than enough. I was badly cut in several places by her chain – I forgot to wear thick gloves – and it wasn’t pleasant. And the “strange” bit – none of the dogs I’ve owed ever have smelled bad – even when wet. It’s as if they just don’t omit “bad wet dog” odor. Truly weird.

You’re right of course – despite all the crazy moments, when human patience is about to snap – I wouldn’t have it any other way – truly the “family” of girls – (2 female dogs &I female cat) are a blessing.

Patricia, I’ve not even finished my first cup of coffee & you had me laughing out loud! Maybe today is going to be better because of you! (Sinus headache) Maybe you could try paying a groomer on the dogs stinkiest days? 🙂 Thank you for the laugh. Have a wonderful weekend. ~amy

Well I’m glad that my reply had you laughing – just hope no coffee related incidents resulted because of it.

Indeed, if it came to it, I would easily opt for a groomer, but so far, knocking on wood – the closet being my hard noggin, it has ‘t come to this yet. Having mentioned this, now of course, Murphy’s Law says Niekah will go outside and find the swampiest bits to muck about it. 😉

I hope you feel much better Amy. I read in one of your posts – regarding a physical therapist – that you suffer from chronic pain and various afflictions. Seems like the club grows larger – I too have similar problems – so – well – one moment at a time – and as always, trying to see the beauty and joy in the simple pleasures.

Have a great weekend too 🙂

  4. What a beautiful dog! I did not know that Husky usually don’t like water. It must have been warm that the water entice her in for a dip. She is gorgeous.

Thank you, Honey. She has always loved water. I had another that would tip-toe in, but never went any deeper. She is a lot of fun around water! ~amy
