In 1923 the “Royal Society of Miniature Painters” (England) changed their name (with the King (King George VI ?)of England’s approval) to “The Royal Society of Miniature Painters and Sculptures” to allow one American, my great Grandfather, Louis Rosenthal. Louis Rosenthal (1888-1964) was a famous sculpture. These pieces i photographed belong to his Grandson, my father. The story behind the quote in the title’s “carried a museum in his pocket” can be found in his online museum.
My favorite is ‘The Devil on Ice Skates’ & ‘Zohar’, Zohar is the very large bearded sculpture shown at the beginning of this post.

I have been thinking and thinking about these posts about your Great Grand Father. It is an extraordinary connection you have to be linked by birth to a man who was so fabulously talented. I love his work and I am so touched to discover that the Society, here in England changed their name so as to be able to include his wonderful work.
It is so important to feel that we are linked to our ancestors and being linked to him helps you to see ( I hope) how special and creative YOU are).

Oh, Karen, I do like to think that he would have liked me a lot. He was so gifted & quite famous until the Great Depression…as you know the first things to go are the arts in a terrible economy. My father has a great many pieces that I look at every time I visit them. I do have one of his antique carving knife & a bowl of the wax that he used to create his pieces. It is a treasure, set inside my china cabinet. I also love that England changed the name of the society to allow him in. WOW. I love history & I’m grateful to all my ancestors for passing down their love of art to me. ~amy

Cooollllll!!!!! The only claim to fame I have is not nearly so grand. My great-great grandfather and his brother were some of the original Texas Rangers. And a couple of many generations distant of the same lineage were signers of the constitution of the US.

This is a great claim to fame! I love history & I’m lucky to hold in my own hands, something that he created years ago. I wish I could have known him. He died about 6 years before I was born. I think he would be proud of me though. ~amy
