In fact it looks like solidifying spilled paint pooling together.

It was amazingly colorful considering the grey skies above, maybe that is why they were so much more then I would have seen had it been sunny. Thank you, Gretchen! ~amy

I never knew that they changed color in fall. What a surprise!

I can’t say if they did or not. I remember there being rose/red lily pads before the frost, It was the flower, I had photographed if a few days before in all its glory & then I found it like that, it was still a lot of color to capture on such a dull day! Thank you, Lynda! ~amy
