art project for very young children

These colleges where made by children ages 3-5. I started with yellow construction paper, I dropped green paint at the top of the paper & gave them a painting tool, similar to a comb & asked them to comb the paint down, I then asked them to flip the paper upside down. I had cut green construction paper into ‘stems’. I cut red tissue paper into ‘poppies’ & black circles (a bit messy circles) at home.
This age has to build their fine motor skills & learn to follow instructions. learn new vocabulary words, “these are to be stems to the flowers. Stems come up from the ground, which is the bottom. Show me the bottom of the paper” The stems & tissue paper was placed on top of wet paint so that it stuck. The black circles, the kids used glue sticks. “Place the black circles in the middle of the red flowers”
Watching those baby looking fingers do art work is amazing to watch. At this age, my goal~at times, was to have them put pieces together to make a whole. When they create something that looks like real flowers by listening to new words, repeating the colors often, you can build an impressive vocabulary while they find pride in what they created. They learn things & don’t even know it.
The need for good fine motor skills is very needed. When children reach pre-K or kindergarten, they have found that children’s fine motor skills are not as good as children in the past. Due to video games, iPads…I guess. Children need to work on puzzles & legos, blocks, coloring, painting, glueing, cutting…Get those fingers strong, because they are meant to do great things.

Thank you Mr. David Oaks. Thank you for telling me this. I’ve watched my visiters fall, but found a great freedom knowing I don’t have anything to really prove anymore & I can ramble on as i feel like it. ~amy
