After living in Alabama for 20 years, i still can’t associate Alabama & Mardi Gras together. I mean, Mardi Gras is New Orleans, right? Wrong! The first celebration of Mardi Gras in the United States was celebrated in Mobile, Alabama, the year was 1703….fifteen years before the birth of New Orleans!! Mobile was the first capital of French Louisiana (REALLY?) (1702) The festival began as a French Catholic tradition. Mobile’s celebration is a multi-week event. And it is far more family friendly! So grown ups can play too… The New Orleans Mardi Gras is for the young & drunk.
Maybe i can help change the over all perceptions of the state of Alabama by showing the cool city of Mobile (party city) and Fairhope (artist city) all sit very close to the gulf of Mexico… No Bible belt feel to either one.
Great series of images! D

Thank you, D. A great city! A type that i wouldn’t/can’t associate to the Deep South of Alabama, yet, there it sits for over 300 years. ~amy

it was on the side of a store, that had closed its doors. I can’t believe a store like that would go out of business in Mobile! Thank you, Eva! ~amy
