I agree from the back it is a Coppers Hawk. He is a resident of Alabama. He hunts birds and squirls in house back yards.

He was watching the squirrel I posted later. I scared him away when I tried to go outside to photograph him/her better. That bird can fly!! ~amy

I just knew it would be you to answer me!! Thank you, we googled Cooper’s Hawk & enjoyed finding a match. The orange eye was what threw me off, because when young they are yellow. I tapped on my window & he swiveled his head around & looked at me straight on. If I was a bird & that was the last thing I saw before it took me down, I would probably die of a heat attack first! π ~amy

I would go for a Northern Goshawk, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Goshawk. They have these fierce orange eyes!

Thank you for your guess! I’ve been informed by a bird blogger, who’s word I’d trust in a heartbeat, that it was a Cooper’s Hawk. The adult has those scary fierce orange eyes. ~amy
