This is Vulcan, the the Roman god of Forge. Birmingham was formed as an industrial city in 1871. The area of the city was very special because it had coal, iron ore & Limestone, the raw materials for making iron & steel. I don’t really know the history, but I know that he needed to be repaired & I vaguely remember a huge fundraiser to save him. They raised the money & brought him down in pieces in 1999. We went to see the pieces, the baby in my arms is Sophie. I have my hand leaning on his tush in one of the pictures we took that day. It took 4 years to complete his repairs & they redesigned the park & museum around 2003. , I forgot to write down the dates, if you’d like more info just google Vulcan in Birmingham, Alabama…The coolest thing I read was Vulcan @ 56 feet tall is the largest statue ever cast in the U.S.A. So how cool was the chance to see him down & touch him. I also remember a religious group wanted to have his tush covered up, because it was offensive. Thank God someone with the wits to vote that down & repair him as the original sculptor made him.

Very interesting!
