The human face

I am known, by few, as a causal family photographer.  I am cheap, after editing all the pictures (which takes bloody hours)  I burn families the whole shoot on CDs, even the candid ones (which are the best anyway).  For $100.  Sad, really.  But the thing is I worry & worry that they will hate all the pictures, if I charged more. ( My training involves working in the darkroom with Dad when I was five.  He shoved his Hasselblad (sp?) in my hands at 10, an SLR whenever he felt I could handle it.)  But for that cheap a price, I can just forget it ever happened.  I am fortunate enough to have a husband to support me.  After a shoot, we usually go out to dinner & order food from a waiter, who handed us a menu, with crazy prices & we buy them and eat it.  (usually I stand in line to get to the register, “may I have a chicken sandwich from the dollar menu please?” because this is where the kids want to go).   That is what the money is for. Special money for something special.  I’ve had to turn down a lot of shoots lately because of my temporary disability, but maybe they’ll come around again.  Or I can just work the register at whole foods.  I post objects, because they can’t get mad at me. My favorite thing  to photograph are people. But I don’t want to ask permission to use anyone else’s pictures, they would probably want to pick out the ones they look least fat in. So I am showing you my children.

Nature can be painted, with human flaws, but still it is art.  I cannot paint people, I can’t get past the one thing on the face that is off by a speck.  Everyone sees that, everyone’s eyes go straight for the mistake.  So I leave painting faces up to the ones God grant that gift to.  BUT I do see God’s work in the human face & I see the spirit in their eyes.  My camera can catch it. The photo above is my son laughing while eating his breakfast in Lillian, Alabama.  See?  The candid ones are the best.
