They are also called “thongs” in Australia, which has been known to create some confusion in US-Aussie conversations!

Yes, in the very southern part of Alabama, they are called thongs too. I’d never heard them described thus, until i moved to Birmingham & met a woman from Mobile, Alabama. & yes, it was a funny conversation at first! She was in her late 60s & talking about buying new thongs…i just couldn’t believe it! ~amy
