Yesterday, we spent the day riding horses at Triple E farm. We were invited to go out to lunch with the Ruha’s. We went to an awesome restaurant in Helena, Alabama. We sat on a deck facing a river. The restaurant is Papa Saia’s. (Address is 4300 Helena Road, Helena Alabama 35080.) Jason Ruha was sweet enough to teach my son how to eat crawfish. I am from Vermont & my husband was born & raised in Alabama. He does travel for work, so do most of the cooking. (Although he is a gazillion times a better cook then I) The most common ingredients in our meals are garlic, olive oil, tofu, feta cheese, pine nuts, veggies galore, with Israeli Couscous or pasta. No Crawfish. Β Anyway, after you’ve suck out the meat & juice of a Crawfish, you can turn them into finger puppets, but only if have a wicked sense of humor. Β I was a fantastic dayβ¦
(btw, we ate chicken tacos, nachos & hot wings)

So jealous… I love love love crawfish and it’s not something you find often in Ft Lauderdale…

Hi!
As usual I love the photos π
But I have a more serious question lurking around my mind, and it’s the following:
we have quite a problem with these introduced (i.e. “alien”) critters here in Europe, especially in the Iberian peninsula (Spain, Portugal, a bit of the south of France) where they’ve found the perfect habitat, very few predators and easy competition.
I’ve worked with otters in Portugal and one of our research subjects was pollution in rivers, which we found to be unsurprisingly high. These crayfish are filter-feeders, so they filter out the water for microscopic stuff and are very prone to pollution.
Are the crayfish in your area safe to eat? How is your rivers’ pollution? Are you happy with eating them, often, or was this a one-off thing?
Sorry for the long comment, I was just interested in knowing what you thought of them (so maybe I can try them next time I see them at the market!) π

Wow. I wish I knew the answers to your questions. I’m afraid I’ve never eaten one before. I do know that they are brought in alive & are boiled with super spicy “broth” ~ my son didn’t know they were spicy & that is where his shock came from. I’m told they taste like lobster. I get the impression that they are more often served at a gathering of people- outside party, i suppose because you eat them with your fingers & there is a lot of slurping. Ugh. Maybe you could google them. They are the scavengersβ¦& they are related to coach roaches. Does this help? Sorry! My son ate one & he ordered chicken tacos too. π ~amy
