and then she danced

and then she danced

I had a shoot at a school today. A guest was to appear, one who taught children to use a hula hoop. A few of the younger grades lined up in a long row on the gym floor. Once we were settled, a teacher asked the woman to show the children what she can do with her hula hoop.
The chairs were piled high along the walls, basketball hoops pulled up as high as they could go, an upright piano pushed out of the way & the smell of rubber kick balls…a gym.  She turned on the music, John Mayer’s voice began to bounce off the walls. And then she started to dance. The strips on her pants turned into waves, the hula hoop was not the toy of my childhood, but an extension of her body. I, like all the children, were in awe. The children’s eyes were wide open, their chins resting on the floor. And she danced.

It was a job. I think I had more fun then I was supposed to. Don’t tell anyone.
