Sloss Furnace…i was told in 1993 that it is a Birmingham (Alabama) landmark that everyone should see. In 1995, i bought a house & got a job that took me past Sloss Furnace twice a day for two years. Did i visit? No. People promised to take me, but it didn’t happen, until i met the Love Of My Life this summer. He is a school teacher, an educator…i could listen to him all day. On a Sunday with nothing left to do…he drove me to the famous Sloss Furnace. He showed me the path he’d taken with his students, and spoke to me, of its history, as well as any tour guide would.Β He said…Sloss Furnace is a great testament to Birmingham’s noble industrial past.
Sloss Furnace put Birmingham, Alabama on the map. It’s a pretty cool place, yet also bit creepy (i felt like i was being watched. ghosts?) I highly recommend going. The history is incredible…a bathhouse for blacks on one side, and a much nicer one for whites on the other. Time stands still here, allowing all who view it, a chance to see the very ugly side of Birmingham, Alabama’s history. Racism is alive & well here still, though it’s better hidden.Β It can be found in the closed & small minded self righteous fools who walk among us.
and here be ghosts.

Beautiful photos! Your colors are so vivid! I have always loved photos of post-industrial decay, though I don’t know why. You do it as well as anyone I’ve ever seen. Next time I’m back in Alabama to visit my folks, I’ll try to take in the Sloss Furnace.

I’ve seen shows about ghost hunting dining episodes there. I’ve driven past it a few times myself, but never stopped either, as it’s usually as we’re passing through Birmingham. It looks like such a cool place to explore. Nice to meet you, by the way. Love your pics! I’ll have to make sure we check it out next time we’re passin’ through. π

Your eye for color continues to astonish me. Your images remind me to look more closely at things I normally pass by (in the hopes of spotting rusty rivits and rogue Christmas lights).
