Oh, GOSH! I am so embarrassed! I will fix it. i thought this was from the tree that drops the cactus-type cherries in the fall. So is that a Tulip Poplar? ~amy

No, that is a Sweetgum. If you want botanical names a Sweetgum is a Liquidambar stryaciflua. Tulip Poplar is Liriodendron tulipifera. The leaves do look similar but the bark is different, Tulip Poplar is smoother and lighter grey spotted, the Sweetgum is rougher,darker and the twigs have corky ridges. Both are native to Bham.

Well, first, i was wrong, it is a Tulip Poplar blossom. Oops, a gardening blogger corrected me. They are weird because they have four sets of petals to open. really cool to watch. Usually i only see the orange/green petals on my driveway, but a storm knocked this branch down for me to watch open. it only took 22 years before i could finally see one open at eye level. ~amy
