ready for a good laugh? My art class

At the beginning of all my art classes, the children learn to draw something, some times we ink & color it.  The younger the child, the simpler the subject.  I usually chose animals.  Animals that can be  drawn by using basic shapes. Yesterday, I had three boys. The youngest is in kindergarten.  The oldest is a 2nd grader.  It is a tradition, every drawing has to be dated, signed & they have to name their artwork.  Ok. These boys can get silly with names. Diaper, just the word, is hysterical. Dirt bag (I say no, use nice names) But someone always sneaks in a “dirty” name when I am usually spelling something for another.  Yesterday, I had them draw a “cartoon” cat.  I draw mine upside down, so that they can follow along with the shapes.  The first one is mine, it’s the others that ROCK!

mine is named George.

Yeah! So do I! I had the worst art teacher imaginable… she squashed any creative spark I had when I was little. Thankfully, I’ve recovered some of it in my photography… but I’ve never felt confident to draw or paint since. 😦 You rock, Amy!

Oh- art is creation. Just as God creates, art gives us a chance to let go & create our world on a piece of paper. Art should be something that feels good & brings us peace. I teach my children- any mistakes made with pencil can be erased, any mistakes with paint, can be repainted & any attempt & failure is still a lesson & its just a piece a trash-grab another piece of paper & try again or do something different. Life is too hard without art. I’m glad you are an artist, Reggie! ~amy

      1. A good early teacher makes the world of difference to the progression of a child. Most of my early teachers knocked the creativity out of me. What you are doing Amy, is great.:)

  7. I think very effective simple forms copy/transfer/style unique to child great way to teach focus of subject. I used to try colored pencil copies of paintings of masters-was good training and learning detail study, shape, color.

Thank you, Mr. D’Agostino. I learned a lot by coping others work first. When kids are as young as five, we really need to work with general shapes. Thank you for commenting. ~amy
